Species Information

Bluefin Tuna– We target Bluefin Tuna on offshore charters between May and November. Bluefin tuna are a fast moving, pelagic species that range from fifteen to over three hundred pounds in California. Known for its deep red meat and fat content, people recognize bluefin tuna ahi as a delicacy worldwide. Because they move so fast and quickly drop to unreachable depths at any hint of danger or predation, Bluefin tuna pose a huge challenge to divers. We generally drop divers in front of foamers and breezers, expecting them to quickly descend to around fifty feet. Opportunities can be limited, but these fish are truly trophies of Southern California.

Yellowfin Tuna– Targeted on offshore charters between July and October, this species ranges from fifteen to eighty pounds in our Southern California waters. We find these tuna in open water foamers, breezers, and even on kelp paddies. While not known for the fat content and deep red color like Bluefin, Southern California Yellowfin ahi produces excellent table fare and can be eaten raw.

Yellowtail (Jack)– We target California Yellowtail on offshore charters, island charters, and inshore charters from April until December. California Yellowtail produces high quality hamachi and kanpachi that can be eaten raw (FDA recommends freezing first). We find yellowtail on kelp paddies, in open water and on the edges of kelp beds in Southern California. Yellowtail are known as the pound for pound, hardest pulling fish for divers.

Dorado/Dolphinfish– We target California Dolphinfish (Dorado) on offshore charters in open water and on kelp paddies from August to October. Dorado are known for their unique green and yellow colors and acrobatic fights. These fish produce mahi-mahi that is excellent white fish for almost any recipe.

White Sea Bass– We target White Sea Bass in the Spring, Summer, and Fall months on inshore and island charters in Southern California. These fish earned the nickname “white ghost” because of their uncanny senses that make them hard to ever see or get a shot at.
